Securing your home is essential to your peace of mind. You get to feel safe when you are within the walls of your home. You also get to be out in the world with the confidence that your valuables are protected when you are not there. Use the ideas presented within this article to lock down your peace of mind.

If you are a female and living alone, it’s understandable that you may feel afraid about home invasions. People are more likely to try to take advantage of women. Try placing a pair of big, muddy boots on your front step to give the appearance of a man staying in the house.

When you move into a new home change all the locks. Even though the previous homeowner may have given you keys to the house, there might be a key out there that someone has. To be sure you are as safe as possible, get all new locks for your new house.

You do not necessarily need an expensive home security system to protect your home. You can buy a dog. Dogs are great for home security. Not only will they protect your home while you are away, they are great additions to your family offering protection, companionship and additional security for your home.

If you have a vacation home that you do not spend much time at, a home security system could be a worthwhile investment. This will automatically alert you and the local authorities if something happens to your home while you are away such as a fire, break-in or other problem.

Never open the door for a stranger. Nowadays, thieves are creative when thinking of ways to get homeowners to open a door and let them in. Make it mandatory that doors in your home are only opened for expected visitors.

If you are going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, give people the illusion that someone is there. Leave a TV, radio or light on, so burglars will skip over your home when they are on the hunt for a house to break into.

If you have valuables, and you need a place to store them, look no further than the walls of your home. In between the studs is a lot of empty space, and you can easily store jewelry or anything else you don’t want a burglar to have access to. Simply install a fake electrical outlet, and use it to take things in and out of the wall.

Install an alarm system, and make it visible. A home alarm system is great at alerting homeowners and police quickly in case of a break-in, however ideally, you want to stop the break-in before it happens. To do this, potential burglars need to know that the alarm system is there. Make sure you prominently display the notice you get from your alarm company, even if it clashes with your perfect landscaping.

Where are your door’s hinges? If the hinges for your door are on the outside of your home, you should move them to the inside of your house. Having outside hinges is an easy way for burglars to grant access to your home. All they have to do is knock the pin out of the hinge.

If you are new into a house, replace all the locks. The previous owner may be perfectly respectable, but you can’t know that for sure. Remember that different families might have dwelt there before this person.

Equipping each room in your house with a reliable flashlight (charged with good batteries, of course!) is an excellent safety investment. Power outages are common to all sorts of emergency situations, so having flashlights handy will enable you to maneuver in the dark. Train your kids how to use flashlights so that all members of the family can contribute.

Inscribe your valuable electronics with a number and report this information to the police. This will allow you to track something if a burglar was to come into your house and steal the valuables from your home. This will also save you a lot of time and money as it can be retrieved more effectively.

If you are going on vacation, do not change your answering machine telling everyone that you are going to be away. Burglars will call this number and see that it is open season on your house. Keep your regular message and advise friends and family members to call your cell phone when you are away.

Don’t rely on just a spring lock. Spring locks can easily be broken, sometimes just using a credit card. These locks are just too vulnerable. Have a deadbolt lock installed instead, which is much harder for an intruder to get around. Make sure there is no way a burglar can saw the deadbolt, though.

If any spot around your home is dark, install a motion sensitive or infrared light detector there. This turns them on only when someone lurks there, allowing you to save money on electricity while thwarting anyone who might be casing out your home. No one will rob a home which is well lit!

It is a great idea to do business with a security company that has 24-hour monitoring. If something happens in the middle of the night, you want to be able to get in touch with someone rather quickly. Waiting around for a response will only give robbers the chance to harm you.

Your auto registration is best kept somewhere other than your glove compartment. This isn’t smart since anybody who gets them is going to know your address. Instead, keep them with you at all times, or hide them somewhere else inside your vehicle. They should be close, though, since you’ll need them if you get pulled over.

Now that you have read this article, you should have more than one new idea about how to better protect your home. This is wise to do to protect yourself, your loved ones and anything within your home. Even if nothing happens, you at least have peace of mind that your home is safe.
